TABLE OF CONTENTS
Two academic events took the limelight of the much-awaited 2001:
The goal of the contest was to build a computerized (not radio-controlled) Robotic device capable of moving through a 249cm by 249cm model house with only one floor, detecting a lit candle and putting it out. Robots that consistently accomplished this task in the shortest time won. No restrictions were imposed on the weight of the Robot and the types of materials employed in its construction. The contest entrants could enroll in one of the following divisions: Expert, Senior, High School and Junior.
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Suceava was represented by a 3-student team in the Senior Division: George HOLCA, Andrei Coriolan LEONTE and Dorin PALANCIUC, all 4-year students in Computer Engineering, formed the only European participating team and managed to occupy the 13th place out of 68 teams from all over the world (15 of them were disqualified at the pre-selection stage). The score obtained by the Romanian team was of 36.78 points.
The 10 participating teams were required to use image processing and pattern recognition in order to control the movements of a robot on an area of 6 square meters and make it visit 4 stations in a specified order.
The president of the jury committee was Professor John MILNER (from City University, London) assisted by:
1st prize The Transilvania University of Brașov

Abstract. This paper presents an analytical approach for
the availability evaluation of flexible manufacturing cells (FMC). We define
availability measures in conditions when a manufacturing system is considered
operational as long as its production capacity requirements are satisfied.
The advantage of the approach is that constructing a system level Markov
chain is not required. A manufacturing system is decomposed into manufacturing
cells. For each manufacturing cell a Markovian model is derived and solved
to find the probability of a subset of working machines in each cell, and
a subset of the operating material handling carriers that satisfies the
manufacturing capacity requirements.
Key-words. Availability, manufacturing cells, Markov
chains, state process, task analysis.

Abstract. This paper presents an approach to assembly
sequence planning problem based on Petri nets representation. Assembly
planning is an important step in the design-execution conversion process.
In practice it is important to generate plans that can be successfully
completed using the availability assembly cell. Here, we discuss how hierarchical
nature of assembly is modeled by Petri nets for to represent assembly plans
and respective control plans. An illustrative example was chosen from the
sorting operations in railway systems.
Keywords: assembly plan, assembly Petri net, sorting
operations, railway.

Abstract. We present second order Hybrid Stochastic Petri
Nets (HSPNs) that can be used for modeling dynamic systems that com-prise
both discrete and continuous quantities. Discrete state changes are assumed
to the Markovian process and continuous variables are assumed to be random
diffusion process. This is achieved by the introduction of a new class
of continuous place and continuous transition by a re-formulation of the
enabling and firing rules. By utilizing specific numerical solution technique
on an approx-imation of the first order HSPNs using a discrete-state stochastic
process, from which a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) can be derived.
We present one example to demonstrate the enhancements contained in new
formalism for the modeling and performance evaluation of computers systems.
Keywords: hybrid stochastic Petri nets, discrete-continuous
modeling, performance evaluation.

Abstract. Petri nets are a formal tool very well suited
to the description of distributed and concurrent systems which exhibit
synchronization and contention for shared resources. Adding random temporal
specifications to Petri nets, stochastic Petri nets are obtained from which
event driven simulators can be automatically constructed. This paper describes
the software tool VPNP for the modeling and performability evaluation of
the technical system using generalized stochastic Petri nets. A modeling
tool that has been developed for these purposes is illustrated with an
emphasis on the modeling environment it provides and on its internal software
architecture.
Keywords: software tool, modeling, performance evaluation,
stochastic, Petri nets.

Abstract. The research was focussed on the development
of a general test-bench configuration, in order to facilitate effectively
the on-line monitoring of the tested electromechanical systems, by use
of a virtual instrumentation platform, designed and implemented via LabVIEW
graphical programming language. This kind of test-benches may be optionally
designed to predict the movement characteristics, perform failure diagnosis
and determine the exploitation limits, using the experimental information
derived from the continuous analysis of the control parameters, by use
of a specialised multisensor platform with ANN support.
Keywords: test-benches, virtual instrumentation, multisensor
platform, electromechanical transport systems.

Abstract.The mathematical analysis of transitory
phenomena in induction machines needs the elaboration of some models described
by a system of differential equations. In order to solve this system it
is necessary to determine the literally form of the inverse of the so-called
generalised inductance matrix. In this paper we determine the inverse of
this matrix.
Keywords: the transpose of the matrix, the cellular
decomposition.

Abstract. The aim of the paper is to present a learning
technique for an intelligent system, based on Artificial Neural Network,
with applications in the supervising and control of the electrical power
systems.
The supervising of the power network is achieved with a process computer
network that transmits to the control centre the values of the parameters
measured in power posts and the alarms during a fault in the power transport
network. A prognosis with ANN of the horary city power consumption is also
presented.

Abstract. Competitive business pressures and a desire
to leverage existing information technology investments have led many firms
to explore the benefits of data mining technology. This technology is designed
to help businesses discover hidden patterns in their data -- patterns that
can help them understand the purchasing behavior of their key customers,
detect likely credit card or insurance fraud, predict probable changes
in financial markets, etc...
These pages explore data mining, and its potential benefits to users.
It also explains how data mining activities can be integrated within an
existing user environment, including those activities that already make
use of data warehousing.
