The proposal is aimed at creating a Grid by acquiring a PC cluster that would supply a high performance and dynamically configurable computing infrastructure which would be scalable and autonomous and would offer permanent, secured and efficient access from anywhere.

The potential beneficiaries of the investment will be the R&D institutions, higher education public institutions that operate in the Northern part of the country.

The main goal of the investment is the Cluster, a basic component of a Grid environment which offers a set of services that encapsulate and virtualizes shared resources needed for solving advanced problems from pattern recognition and distributed artificial intelligence field. Clusters represent an alternative to high performance computers.

The objective of the project is the building of a new grid site that will be compatible with the projects financed from European Framework Program.

The requirements for the new GRID are at least 72 processors and a storage capacity of 7 Tb.

It was acquired a cluster with 96 processors PowerXCell with real computer power of 6.45 TFlops in double precision and a storage capacity of 6.936 TB.

Other features are: easy maintenance, backup data storage, backup power supply and backup air conditioning.

The increased computing power will ensure optimal conditions for developing researches on distributed systems, parallel architectures, designing of parallel algorithms and knowledge discovery from data warehouses.

It is estimated that this GRID would be available 24 hours a day and it was established that it would be interconnected with similar grids from The Automatics and Computers Faculty of the Politehnica University of Bucharest, and The "Gh. Asachi" Technical University of Iasi, developed under projects financed by FP6 and CEEX.

The beneficiaries of the existing GRIDs that would get connected with the proposed GRID would also become potential beneficiaries of the GRID that would be developed under this project.

Thanks to the high efficiency of the equipments that will be acquired and the existing partnerships the GRID the competitivness of the University of Suceava will increases.

The University of Suceava will have something important to offer when establishing European and regional partnerships and through the European project proposals it will ensure the increase of the degree in which Romania participates in international research, development and innovation initiatives.
